How to Register a Website

How to Register a Website
By Dave Norton

Registering a website is more commonly referred to as registering a domain name. Registering a domain name is appropriately done when there is an established plan for the website. When a plan is in hand the foundation is not based on hope or indecision but a road map to completion.

The plan of action includes quality key words related to the niche, the content, the theme, pages and sub pages. Also considered are the cost to build and a plan to market the website.

The offerings of the company chosen to register the website is a key factor and will determine a websites success or failure. Choose a hosting company providing understanding of web site construction and willing to help build a successful website at an affordable price. This is the most important decision made in the publication of a internet business.

Plan The Page

Start by using one or two words that apply to the niche of the web site. Use the words that best describe the site and are in demand. Have an idea of how the keywords will be used in the page name an how to incorporate them into the content of the pages. The same keywords incorporated into the content will create relevancy to the name of the page. When selling products place plenty of content describing the product for the search engines to find. The plan should include at least 30 pages of product and/or content.

The Cost

Understand the cost that will be involved with every aspect of the website. Have a cost estimate of the products to be sold. Is there an advertising budget and how much is it. Do I need to hire someone to build the site or am I willing to take the time to build it myself? Do I a have the skills necessary to build a successful website? What is the cost to market a website? Will the web host provide all of these services free or for a fee?

Marketing

Web site marketing begins with the key words and traffic. It then continues through the life of the website. Is the market plan to pay for exposure or is the market place exposed to my site through quality content? Quality directories and forums have a membership fee.

Breaking down all of these components of construction will provide an idea of the cost of the marketing journey. After there is a plan and answers it is time to affirm the website name for the niche.

A Hosting Company to Register the Web site name

There are hosting companies providing basic services at very reasonable cost. They are great if you are an expert webmaster, totally understanding web design, SEO, article writing and can apply every aspect available to build a successful website.

Another type of hosting company is one that truly helps its customers for a very reasonable price. They show how to create a plan with the right key words to connect to your customers.

They teach how to create a webpage and provide the tools to design with your own look and feel or upload your own HTML from your favorite HTML editor. They teach you how to get links coming into your site and enroll in directories. They teach you all the ways possible to make money with your web site.

They provide forums to resolve problems that may exist. They also keep everyone updated on new developments to help create a better website and community of web masters. This is the web hosting company to find.

After you have your plan in hand and understand the cost of a web site endeavor and found the perfect hosting company it is time to register your domain or website.

Domain Names - How to Register a Domain Name

Domain Names - How to Register a Domain Name

Registering a domain name for your online business or organization shows you are a professional willing to spend money to build and host a website. Many people try to start their business online with a free domain and free hosting. This is a mistake as they have no control over their domain. If the company goes bust you lose all your content and your reputation.

Reasons to register a domain name

Professional presence

People are more likely to do business with you if you have a real domain name rather than some obscure website address.

Professional email address

Sending email from an email address that contains your domain name gives your business greater credibility than using gmail, aol, or hot mail address that often are used by spammers.

Permanent home for your website

Even if you change hosting companies your domain name will remain the same. You can take it with you wherever you go.

Branding

Your permanent website address is associated with your business, therefore it will steadily build your brand on the Net.

How to register a domain name

1. Brainstorming

Create a list of possible domain names you wish to use as many of them may already be taken. Try stringing several words together, use numbers or hyphens between the words.

2. Check availability

Visit Godaddy.com (or your favorite domain name registrar) and enter your suggested domain name in the "start your domain search here" box. It will immediately tell you if it's already taken and suggest some alternatives.

3. Purchase your domain name

Depending on the suffix of the domain name you will pay approximately $10.00. Some registrars may charge up to $25.00. If registering with Godaddy they will try to add additional services during the registration process such as privacy, email, hosting, web design, etc. I suggest opting out of these extra services. You can always add them later when you're ready to make an informed decision.

4. Change the name servers

You need to point your domain name to the server hosting your website. Ask your web host for the name servers to use.

To change them in Godaddy log in to your account. Go to the domain manager to view all your domains. Check the box next to your domain, then click on name servers (top navigation bar). Delete the current name servers then enter the new name servers and click OK. It will take 24-72 hours for the changes to take affect.

5. Domain name parking

While you are waiting for your website to be built your domain name registrar will often provide a temporary web page (only if you are using their name servers). If you hired a web designer ask them to upload a temporary web page to the server that tells visitors your web site will be coming soon or is under construction.

5. Web design and hosting

Some domain registrars (such as Godaddy) offer web hosting and/or web design services as well. I recommend only registering your domain name with them as I've received many complaints from clients about their extra services. Find a reputable web design and hosting company so you'll be a happy online business owner.

Tip

Don't delay registering a domain name. It may get registered by someone else if you wait too long.

How Do I Register a Web Address?

How Do I Register a Web Address?
By Scott Kintraw

This is a question many people will suddenly need to answer - how do I register a web address to protect my business name, to protect an idea I have had, or to use my own personal name for a new website? Or, you may want to buy a web address simply as an investment for the future.

'How do I register a web address' is not the right question though. What you should be asking is 'How do I buy a domain name?'

Registering or buying your domain name of choice is what you have to do. It doesn't matter if you simply want to 'reserve' a web address for later use, or put up a web site immediately, you will have to actually register and buy the web address name from a domain registration service. All you need is your credit card or a Paypal account.

We will recommend the best and easiest services to this at the bottom of this article, but whatever service you choose, you will have to pay about $9-$20 a year to have a domain registered in your name - which means that you own it, and no-one else can put up a web site with that URL. You will pay this whether you intend to put up a web site or not.

The first thing to find out is whether the name you want is available or not. To check if it is already taken, simply type the address you want into the address bar at the top of your web browser - for example, iwantthisaddressrightnow.com (use the actual name you want to own).

Two things might happen - the browser will open a web page, in which case you are too late - someone else already has the name. Or, you get a message that your browser can't find the server. This usually means the name has not been taken, and you are in luck. You can now go to a domain registration service and buy it.

Of course, all the domain name services we will tell you about will also allow you to check the availability of domain names directly.

What you should never do is to allow a web hosting service to control your domain name. Many hosts offer a 'free' domain name of your choice when you sign up for a year's hosting with them. Several notorious recent cases have shown that if the hosting company collapses, it is difficult or impossible to retrieve the domain name and register it directly yourself. Many people have lost their precious domain names this way.

If you register with a reputable domain name service you won't have this problem, since you will own the name outright, from the start. Having bought the name, you can usually 'park' the domain with your registration service. You can then sign up for a hosting service, and switch the name servers when you are ready (this is all explained by your new web host).

So, how do you register a web address at one of the online services? Having checked that the name is not taken, simply proceed through their online order form. Default registration includes a record of your name and address, which will be publicly available to anyone who wants to check ownership of your address. You can get a private registration of your domain by paying a little extra if you wish.

That's all there is to it!
